Bradford Live – the Transformation of the Old Odeon: October 2021 – October 2023

The old Odeon building in the centre of the city had lain derelict for over 20 years and was in a very poor state as can be seen from the pictures below.

WGL Stoneclean Ltd were originally asked by the developers to look at repairing the white terracotta tiles that decorate the external elevations of the building. After 20 years of dereliction and neglect many of these large tiles had become chipped and damaged. A new tile could cost over £350 plus the cost of removing the old tile and installing its new replacement. After several weeks of experimentation, WGL came up with repair method using electronically colour matched, UV stabilised epoxies as well as more traditional lime mortars. From a distance the new repairs were virtually undetectable and during the project WGL repaired over 850 of the tiles. Within days of our tile repair methods being accepted by the client, we were asked to look at abrasive grit blasting the steelwork on the inside of the structure.

After a successful trial, WGL finally blasted 3500 m² of steelwork and applying a recognised primer, at the correct thickness, prior to the application of intumescent paint layers. The steelwork was found throughout the building and in particular supporting the roof,
